Firestone Policy Forum 2023: How Far Have We Gotten? Preparing for the First Global Climate Stocktake

When
October 24, 2023 3:00 pm — 5:00 pm
Where
Washington, DC

An ELI Public Seminar

Ahead of the Paris Climate Agreement’s first global stocktake, join the Environmental Law Institute and expert panelists at our inaugural Firestone Policy Forum to discuss how much progress has been made nationally and globally toward greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The Paris Agreement requires Parties to undertake a global stocktake every five years to evaluate collective progress toward achieving its long-term goals and purpose. This year, the first one will take place. The process has three phases: first, information collection and preparation; second, a technical assessment of information; and third, a consideration of outputs. The third phase will include a presentation of the findings, which will occur at the upcoming 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai this December. This will be a critical moment to evaluate global progress in achieving greenhouse gas reductions and for Parties to determine if, when, and how acceleration is needed to realize the Agreement’s overarching goals.

What progress has the United States made toward its nationally determined contribution (NDC) to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52 percent below 2005 levels in 2030? Where does broad international progress toward the Paris Agreement goals stand? What might the first ever stocktake at COP28 look like, and what impact could it have on global climate policy? Join us for an in-depth discussion of these questions and many more.

The Firestone Policy Forum honors the inspiring legacy of Judge Nancy Firestone (1951-2022), whose work as an attorney, policymaker, and judge left an indelible mark on the environmental law community.
