Bean wrote The Evolution of National Wildlife Law (now in its third edition) while at ELI in 1977. He then headed the wildlife conservation efforts of the Environmental Defense Fund for 31 years. Most recently, he moved to the Interior Department in 2009 and became its Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks in 2014.
