Hybrid (in-person in DC & via webinar)

This is the first session in ELI's monthly series focusing on Global Environmental Rule of Law.

Join the Environmental Law Institute to celebrate the release of the United Nations report: Environmental Rule of Law: Tracking Progress and Charting Future Directions. Featuring contributors to the report, this event also kicks off the first of a five-part ELI series on the environmental rule of law. The U.N. report is a follow-up to 2019’s First Global Report on Environmental Rule of Law, and provides a comprehensive assessment of how the environmental rule of law has advanced and been challenged since publication of the first report. Collecting and analyzing data from a survey of 193 U.N. Member States regarding their laws, institutions, civic engagement, rights, and justice, this report highlights the most prevalent aspects of environmental rule of law across countries and tracks progress in addressing the triple planetary crisis.

In this hybrid event, our speakers will discuss the report and recent global developments in environmental rule of law. They will also introduce the topics to be covered in the four subsequent parts of the monthly series. How effective have new environmental laws been at addressing the climate crisis? What global trends have our contributors identified in the environmental rule of law? What are the biggest challenges in implementing environmental laws, and how can they be overcome? We will discuss these questions and many more.
