ELI 2022 Policy Forum
October 18th, 2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act (CWA). The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948 was the first major United States legislation targeting water pollution; it was significantly expanded through amendments in 1972 to become what is now commonly recognized as the CWA. The CWA is the primary federal law governing pollution control and regulating quality of the waters of the United States. Though it has achieved vital successes, whether those successes can be sustained and how further progress can be made remain fundamental questions.
Join the Environmental Law Institute and expert panelists to evaluate the past 50 years of the Clean Water Act, while also looking ahead to the next 50 years. Our experts will focus broadly on the Act; their conversation will span different aspects of it. They will also discuss water justice and the CWA’s advances and shortcomings in meeting the needs of communities. What challenges have we overcome, and where does the Act stand now? How might Sackett v. EPA (Sackett II) affect the CWA? What challenges lie ahead, and how can the Act weather the problem of aging and failing infrastructure across the country? What needs to be done next to fulfill the CWA’s goals? Our experts will address these questions and so much more at ELI’s 2022 Annual Policy Forum.
