Summary

Wetland quantity and quality have dramatically declined in the Great Lakes Basin since European settlers arrived in the Great Lakes region. The full extent of these wetland losses is not know, but estimates are that between 60 and 80percent of the pre-settlement wetlands have been loss. In recent years, awareness has grown that has resulted in commitments at all levels of governance to greater protection of wetlands. This article suggests a number of avenues for expanded and coordinated international wetlands protection.
