Following a recent international conference in Portland, Maine, the governors of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and the premiers of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia joined in signing an Agreement on Conversation of the Marine Environmental of the Gulf of Maine. This historic agreement signifies a commitment on the part of these states provinces to protect the ecological region which they share and through which their individual interests are joined. This agreement was signed, not in the wake of an environmental disaster in the Gulf, but rather in the acknowledgement of the threatened environmental quality of the region and the belief that "the most effective means to protect, conserve, and manage the region's resources is through the cooperative pursuit of consistent policies, initiatives, and programs."
