Wetlands as Harbingers of Climate Change

Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 13
Summary

Tracking changes in vegetation as climate becomes more variable could begin by focusing on downstream wetlands, which accumulate floodwaters, sediments, nutrients, and other materials, all of which can rapidly shift the boundaries of dominant species. Shifts due to extreme rainfall and flooding events are likely to occur sooner in wetlands than in nearby uplands.
