Profiles of Innovative State Programs: Indiana - Guidance on School IAQ Management Best Practices

Indiana’s health code requires the state Department of Health to adopt rules establishing a school IAQ inspection, evaluation, and parent/employee notification program. The Department’s rules implementing the law incorporate IAQ criteria that schools must meet and that are reviewed during state inspections. These criteria address a variety of important IAQ issues, including: mold; other allergens/irritants; animals; ventilation rates and HVAC maintenance; and vehicle idling.

Profiles of Innovative State Programs: Washington - Indoor Air Quality During Wildfires

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) provides information on wildfire smoke, including health effects, populations at risk, and steps for preventing and addressing exposure. In 2015, the Department developed guidance for schools and other mechanically-ventilated buildings on how to address ventilation and indoor air quality during wildfire events.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has developed several informational resources addressing the dangers of mercury vapor to human health. Through these materials, the agency encourages proactive steps to prevent a mercury release. MDHHS provides guidance for taking action in the event of a mercury spill, to prevent the spread of contamination and protect human health. Educational videos, fact sheets, and emergency contact information are also available to the public through a mercury portal on the MDHHS website.

Profiles of Innovative State Programs: New Jersey - IAQ in School Workplaces

New Jersey law establishes a framework for regulating safety and health in public workplaces throughout the state. Pursuant to this law, the state has adopted a regulation focused specifically on indoor air quality in public workplaces. Known as the Indoor Air Quality Standard, the regulation requires employers to take specific actions in areas such as ventilation and HVAC maintenance, moisture control, and renovation of occupied buildings.

District of Columbia

A 2014 District of Columbia law requires landlords to remediate mold contamination and to disclose previous mold contamination to prospective tenants. The law also directs the District Department of the Environment to establish a certification system for mold professionals, along with minimum mold work practice standards and guidelines. D.C. Code 8-241.01-.09.

Vermont

Vermont health law authorizes the promulgation of regulations to preserve the public health. 18 Vt. Stat. §102. Pursuant to this authority the Department of Health has by regulation adopted a Rental Housing Health Code, which sets forth minimum health and habitability standards that all residential rental housing in Vermont must meet. Code Vt. Rules §§13-140-31 et seq.
