Indoor Environments Program

?

For more than three decades, ELI’s Indoor Environments Program has helped make buildings healthier places to live, learn, and work by supporting the development and implementation of indoor air quality (IAQ) policies and programs.  Our materials describe state IAQ laws and regulations, highlight leading examples, and discuss key policy strategies for advancing evidence-based practices to reduce indoor exposures.

Why is Indoor Air Quality Important?

People in the United States spend most of their time indoors, and indoor levels of pollutants are often higher than outdoor levels. Air pollutants commonly found inside homes, schools, and other buildings originate from both indoor and outdoor sources and are associated with a range of adverse health impacts.  READ MORE about indoor air quality and why IAQ policy is important.

The Database of State IAQ Laws is a compilation of laws reflecting a wide range of state policy strategies to improve indoor air quality. The information in the Database is available through PDF files and an online search tool.
