The New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) undertakes a variety of activities addressing indoor air quality, including conducting research and providing technical guidance and informational resources on a wide range of IAQ-related topics.
Why is this Project Important?
Air filtration is a key strategy for reducing indoor exposure to common pollutants such as particulate matter and to infectious aerosols. One way to do this is to provide “in duct” filtration through a building’s HVAC system, which can filter outdoor air entering the building, as well as air that recirculates inside the building. Another approach is to use portable air cleaning devices; a properly sized and maintained portable air cleaner can effectively remove contaminants from the air recirculating in the room where it is located.
What Materials Were Developed?
The NYS DOH created a web page dedicated to the subject of indoor air cleaners. The web page provides background on indoor air contaminants, describes different types of air cleaners and air cleaning technologies, offers tips for selecting and using a portable air cleaner, and provides links to other air cleaner resources.
The agency also makes available a wide array of materials on other IAQ topics.
