The Vermont Department of Health (DOH) undertakes a variety of activities to promote healthy school environments through its Envision Program.
Why is this Project Important?
School indoor air quality affects the health, learning, and productivity of millions students and staff. Many common indoor contaminants are associated with an array of adverse health effects. Children are especially vulnerable to these indoor air risks because their bodies are developing and because they breathe more air relative to their size than adults.
What Materials Were Developed?
The Vermont DOH Envision Program was established by the School Environmental Health Act (Act 125), passed by the state legislature in 2000. One way the Envision Program addresses indoor air quality is by providing model plans, policies, and guidance to schools. These materials include a model school walkthrough inspection checklist; model procedures addressing HVAC, IPM, construction/renovation, and purchasing; and a model environmental health policy and plan. Participating schools can apply to the Envision Program for a Certificate of Achievement.
